About this painting

Christ lies on a white shroud across the knees of those who loved Him, and His feet are kissed. Two of those gathered round Him were never at Calvary. Italy's national catalogue names Saint Dominic among them, and the Blessed Villana delle Botti: her kinsman Fra Sebastiano Benintendi, who arranged the commission in 1436 for the altar of the oratory of the Compagnia del Tempio, had her painted in, and Orlandi thought the patron himself appears as Dominic. Fra Angelico signed for a payment that December, but the catalogue dates the finish to 1440, by a year written in capitals on the border of Our Lady's veil: MIIIIXXXX.
