About this painting

A camel leans in over an open grave and speaks, its words unrolling on a scroll. The brothers had quarrelled: when Damian accepted a gift from a woman they had healed, Cosmas asked not to be buried with him. After the beheading the Christians meant to honour that wish, until, the Golden Legend says, a camel spoke with a human voice and told them to bury the brothers together. The Web Gallery of Art places this scene first from the right on Fra Angelico's San Marco predella. A priest reads from his book. Four haloed bodies lie in the trench, and a fifth is lowered to join them.
