A young man stands bare in white sand, letting a coral-red cloth fall onto a white one already on the ground. Over his other shoulder hangs a brown skin. The National Gallery of Art names the moment: Saint John exchanging his rich, worldly clothes for a rough camel-hair coat, and the Web Gallery of Art knows no other painting of John at this moment. Earlier artists, the Gallery notes, dwelt on the skin's divine origin or on his preaching; Domenico Veneziano turned to the decision itself, to forsake luxury. In the Gallery's reading the body is a Grecian type made a religious being by the golden halo, here a thin gold plate edged in red, and the bare peaks stress how desolate a place he has chosen. Luke says only that he "was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel."
