About this painting
Her painted life has been broken up and scattered. The Met holds five scenes; two are in Cleveland, one in Detroit, one in Siena, one at the Thyssen, a Crucifixion in Utrecht, two pilaster saints in another Dutch museum, and a Death of Catherine in a private collection nobody names. What survives here is the exchange itself — the episode Raymond of Capua recorded, in which Christ takes her heart away and gives her his own in its place.
