God the Father leans out of a storm of blue wings and sets one finger on the rim of the world. The Metropolitan Museum reads the globe as the universe, earth at the center, then the four elements, the planets and the zodiac, with God borne aloft by seraphim. At the right a diminutive Adam and Eve are driven from Paradise, whose four rivers issue from the ground at lower right. The angel who drives them is naked; the Met suggests his human form may symbolize compassion for fallen humankind. Giovanni di Paolo painted it for San Domenico, Siena. The one who sends them out shares their skin.
