About this painting

A stone in one hand, a small crucifix in the other, and between them lies the whole desert. Ercole de'Roberti seats Saint Jerome before a vaulted ruin. The Getty reads his wiry limbs, sunken eye sockets and tanned skin as testimony to four years in the desert southeast of Antioch, and the stone as the one he beat against his breast until the tempting visions passed. Behind him sit his red cardinal's hat and a book, which the Getty ties to the Bible he put into Latin, and it links the gold-flecked detail to a refined patron, perhaps at Ferrara's Este court. The lion waits by the ruin.
