About this painting

A red hat lies in the grass beside a closed book, and its owner lies stretched among the rocks, a crucifix held between his forearms. Hieronymus Bosch was named for this saint, and MSK Gent says he took Jerome as a role model, a scholar of relentless moralism who left public life in Rome for an ascetic life in Palestine. Howard Oakley points out the cardinal's scarlet hat at his feet and the scarlet cassock wrapped round a hollow trunk where an owl perches. The lion, which legend says Jerome freed of a thorn, is here, the museum notes, a small domestic animal. Everything is put down but the Cross.
