Bones lie in the grass at the foot of the Cross, a skull among them, and Christ hangs above them with His head bowed. The Web Gallery of Art's commentary reads the ground as the place reserved for the torture of condemned criminals, at the edge of a Brabant city visible in the distance, with a broken gibbet and crows. Into that ground Hieronymus Bosch sets a kneeling donor, whom Saint Peter, keys in hand, presents to Saint John; Our Lady stands beside them. Beyond, small figures walk the paths toward a mill on the left and a castle on the right, on an ordinary day like yours.
