About this painting

Christ goes down under the beam, bare feet on the ground, and turns His face out of the crowd toward whoever stands before Him. Patrimonio Nacional's 2016 catalogue of the Escorial Boschs calls that look meekness. It points to the board of nails He is made to tread on, a detail found in fifteenth-century miniatures, and to a procession of men of bourgeois appearance, impassive. One cape bears a crescent moon, which the catalogue identifies with the Turkish heretic; Simon of Cyrene, in a white tunic, is being told to help. Hieronymus Bosch keeps the city far off and small. The eyes are on you.
