Christ holds the cross the way a man holds a thing he has chosen, long fingers open on the wood, eyes lifted past it, the crown of thorns on His head. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya reads the cross as triumph over death, not an instrument of martyrdom, and the face as serene, its gaze confident of eternal life. El Greco, the museum says, models volumes with colour and deforms bodies to show spiritual unease. Santiago Espona left the canvas to the museum in 1958. The source the museum names is the Imitation of Christ, and its reversal holds: carry the cross willingly, and it will carry you.
