About this painting
Christ prays on the Mount of Olives and El Greco fills the ground around him with signs. The museum points to two: an olive trunk cut through with a shoot rising out of it, which may mean the resurrection, and a branch of ivy gripping a rock for the persistence of faith. White strokes break across the whole surface, an illumination answering to nothing inside the picture. He painted the subject repeatedly from the late 1580s — horizontal at first, then upright after 1600, as here.
And going a little further, he fell upon his face, praying and saying: My Father, if it be possible, let this chalice pass from me. Nevertheless, not as I will but as thou wilt.
