About this painting

An angel kneels on a cloud and holds out a gold cup, the chalice Christ has just asked the Father to take away: "let this chalice pass from me." Christ kneels with His hands open. Below Him three disciples sleep. The Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires names the signs El Greco set in the ground: an olive trunk cut through with a shoot rising from it, which may allude to the resurrection, and ivy gripping a rock for the persistence of faith. White strokes break across the whole surface, in the museum's words an arbitrary, unreal illumination. The cup is still held out.
