The Child has hold of His Mother's finger, and all heaven keeps still around that small grip. Clouds and cherubs carry them; two angels pray with joined hands. Below, two saints are cut short, which Félix Monguilot Benzal reads as deliberate illusionism: in the retable of the Capilla de San José in Toledo they stand behind the altar, and the altar finishes them. The lamb has named Agnes since the Middle Ages, the sign of her virginal innocence; over her companion, whom the lion names Martina, rivers of ink have run. On the lion's head the National Gallery of Art reads El Greco's initials in Greek, delta and theta.
