The Father holds the Son, and the Son is dead. The Holy Spirit, as a dove, hangs above Them; a wound shows in His side, and His feet rest on the heads of small cherubs. Around Them the angels grieve, while, as the Prado notes, the Father's face stays composed. The Prado traces El Greco's design to a Dürer source that fuses the Compassio Patris with the Throne of Grace, sees Michelangelo in the heroic body, and reads the whole as "a sort of male Pietà." The canvas crowned the attic storey of the altarpiece at Santo Domingo el Antiguo. One storey below, Our Lady rose on her crescent moon.
