Scripture assembles the three Persons once, at the Jordan, where nobody dies. So Rubens builds the doctrine out of a corpse. On a burial shroud the dead Christ lies across God the Father's lap, foreshortened, turned outward; Antwerp's record reads the gesture: the Father shows the faithful the body of his Son, tortured to death. The dove hangs above. Two mourning angels hold the instruments of the Passion.
It hung over an altar in Antwerp's Calced Carmelite church, given by Judoca van der Capelle, 10 April 1621. She and her husband lay buried in front of that altar.
