God the Father gives an order, and an angel fits a pair of wings to Our Lady's shoulders. She carries the Christ Child upward and treads on the serpent coiled around the moon. The Getty's curators set out the rest: at the left Saint Michael and his angels throw down the seven-headed red dragon, and the demons fall as Virgin and Child rise. The wings are the ones the Apocalypse gives the woman, to fly from the serpent. Rubens made this oil sketch as the modello for the high altar of Freising Cathedral, and his quick strokes keep everything in motion, down and up at once.
