Our Lady kneels at her desk and lifts one hand, and all of heaven leans toward her. Gabriel comes in on a cloud; the Barnes Foundation describes his announcing that she will conceive a Son by the power of the Holy Spirit, and a ring of cherubs encircling the Dove of the Holy Spirit behind him. High above, in the Barnes's description, God the Father rests His arm on a large sphere and extends His scepter downward. In the foreground below her sits a group of sibyls, female prophets, one pointing up; across the steps, bearded men hold scrolls and a stone tablet. Julius Held catalogued it among Rubens's oil sketches. In Luke the angel says the Holy Ghost will come upon her and the power of the Most High overshadow her. Every prophecy on the steps is waiting on Our Lady at her prayers.
And the angel answering, said to her: The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee and the power of the Most High shall overshadow thee. And therefore also the Holy which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.
