About this painting

A small angel grips a man by the hand and draws him up out of the fire; below, the others still burn and look up. Christ stands barefoot at the centre and looks down at Teresa, who kneels at the right with her hands open. The British Museum, describing the engraving after this canvas, names the rising man as Bernardino de Mendoza, set free alone. In Teresa's own Book of Her Foundations he is brother to the bishop of Ávila, dead suddenly of illness after giving her his house and grounds at Rio de Olmos for the Valladolid foundation, and released from purgatory at the first Mass said in that house; she saw him afterwards, his face joyful and resplendent. Rubens made it for a side altar of the Discalced Carmelite church in Antwerp, pendant to his Education of Mary. The church is gone. One hand holds another.
