A friar stands in a niche with a skull held in both hands, and his hood hides nearly all his face. Bare toes show under the brown habit. Zurbarán gives Saint Francis one thing to hold and one thing to consider. The Saint Louis Art Museum's label points to the downcast gaze and the shadowed face, which remove him from the viewer's realm, and to a body reduced to simple geometric solids under stark light. The same label recalls the saint famous for receiving the wounds of Jesus in a vision. Three feet tall and a foot wide, the canvas has room for him, the skull, and you.
