Christ's mouth is open because He is still speaking. Four nails hold Him, one through each hand and each foot, and His face turns up out of the dark toward the Father. The Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya describes Him before death, lips half parted, gaze pleading toward heaven; Odile Delenda hears in that gaze the last words Luke gives Him: "Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit." The four nails, Delenda notes, follow Francisco Pacheco's counsel and force the legs to hang parallel, which better suited the dignity of God made man. Behind Him Zurbarán lays the darkness of the three hours, with only a low strip of land beneath, and the hard light, Delenda writes, turns the pale flesh almost to carved relief. The body is still. The voice is going home.
