There is nothing behind him. No hill, no sky, no city, no thieves; the cross stands in a black that goes all the way back, and the body on it is lit as if from a window, pale and smooth and almost unhurt. The feet rest on a small block, one nail through both; the head is lifted and the mouth is open, calling. Above it the title runs in three scripts. Francisco de Goya painted it in 1780 as his reception piece for the Royal Academy of San Fernando, which made him an Academician of Merit for it, and the Prado records that in 1785 it was sent to the Franciscan church of San Francisco el Grande and came to the museum in 1872. The Prado also says that Goya softened the cruelty of the subject and set the beauty of the body in its place, after Mengs. The darkness does the rest. Father, into thy hands.
