A sandal rests on a devil's head, and the fight is already over. Revelation tells of a great battle in heaven; Guido Reni painted its end, the sword lifted for a blow over a Satan already held down under Michael's foot, as Theresa Vella reads it, while a chain hangs from the archangel's other hand. The face is taken from nobody. Reni wrote to Giovanni Antonio Massani that he wanted an angelic brush, or the forms of Paradise, but could not climb so high, and searched the earth in vain; so he painted the form settled in his idea. That letter is lost; Bellori printed it in 1664. Ingrid Rowland notes that he painted on silk, not canvas. Cardinal Antonio Barberini, who built the church, lies at its altar steps under words he dictated himself. Michael's eyes stay on the head beneath his foot.
