Cups are held under the wounds, and none of the blood is let fall. A sun and a moon, each with a face, keep the upper corners; a skull and a bone lie at the foot of the Cross. The Virgin sits at the lower left, and the mounted soldier on the right turns his back. The Minneapolis Institute of Art sets her grief against his indifference, notes Dürer's emphasis on the humanity of Jesus, and says the three angels with chalices draw attention to His fresh wounds. The Large Passion, completed in 1511, was a devotional book, the Gospel narrative told by the monk Benedictus Chelidonius.
