Four seals are opened in Revelation one after another, and every earlier artist had drawn them one after another. Dürer put all four riders in the air at once, trampling forward out of the block in a single wave, and the whole page tilts under them. He was about twenty-six. The book was the first in the history of art conceived, designed and published by an artist — and he borrowed his godfather's type to print the text on the back.
And behold a pale horse: and he that sat upon him, his name was Death. And hell followed him. And power was given to him over the four parts of the earth, to kill with sword, with famine and with death and with the beasts of the earth.
