About this painting

Roses are being handed out as crowns. The Christ Child sets a garland on one kneeling head, His Mother on another, and small angels carry more through the air. The National Gallery Prague reads the whole as an ideal feast of the Brotherhood of the Rosary, painted in 1506 for German merchants at San Bartolomeo in Venice, and names the man the Virgin blesses as Maximilian. Several of the portrait heads, it notes, were changed in the restoration of 1839–41. Under the tree at the right stands Dürer, looking on, holding a sheet with his signature, the year and a line of Latin that says he completed it in five months.
