Two angels hold a crown in the air over the Virgin's head, not yet lowered. She stands with the Child against her cheek; below, one angel plays a harp and another a lute. The Metropolitan Museum says Gerard David took the Virgin and Child from Jan van Eyck's Virgin and Child at the Fountain and set them in a grand arched porch with Italianate capitals, against the Bruges of his day. In the garden beyond, the Met points out a Carthusian monk strolling as he reads, a clue it links to the monastery of Genadedael outside the city walls. The crown still waits above her.
