Jerome kneels with his hand at his breast; the National Gallery says he strikes it with a stone. His cardinal's hat and red robe lie in the grass before him. On a small T-shaped cross of branches, Susan Foister notes, Christ hangs at so acute an angle that His head is hidden, and she reads the white loincloth's colouring as a vision of real presence. Albrecht Dürer painted both sides of the pearwood. The bare back bursts red from a yellow oval; Christof Metzger reads it as the Holy Spirit, a thunderbolt, striking the saint's heart. On the front he strikes; on the back he is struck.
