Saint Francis has come out of his cell barefoot, arms open, face turned up to the light at the top left, where the Frick reads the stigmata arriving. The top edge was cut, and scholars have long suspected a seraph there. The wounds are faint, two red marks on the hands and none at the side, an understatement the Frick calls deliberate. A donkey stands in the field, a heron keeps watch; a skull and a book wait on his desk. Marcantonio Michiel saw it at Taddeo Contarini's in 1525 as a St. Francis in the desert. Bellini leaves the miracle to the light.
