Christ kneels on a high rock and looks up, and a small angel comes down through the dawn holding a cup. The National Gallery calls the rock improbable and reads it as a church altar, where the Mass would be received; above it a cherub holds out a chalice, and a spiked fence post beneath brings to mind the crown of thorns. Bellini lays shell gold in fine strokes for the early morning light. Beyond the river Judas leads the soldiers. Three watchers are asleep in the foreground. Christ prays that this chalice pass from Him, and the cherub is handing it to Him.
