Our Lady sits in the grass with her hands joined in prayer over the sleeping Christ Child, not holding Him. The National Gallery says contemporaries would have known His pose at once: the Lamentation, the dead Christ laid across His Mother's knees. Behind her Bellini lets the ordinary day go on, an ox at pasture, a herder with his staff, a castle in the sun. In a bare tree at the edge a dark bird waits, and the Gallery calls it a vulture, a foreboding symbol of death. Spring has reached everything but that branch. What the bird waits for is asleep in her lap.
