Christ stands to the waist in His tomb, eyes shut, arms crossed, the wound open in His side. Dead, and upright. The Museo Poldi Pezzoli reads the tomb's side walls, drawn in perspective, as an invitation to the eye, so that a look which begins on the body ends on a horizon lit by the first light of day. A dry tree, the museum's sign of death and sin, stands on the rock at the right; one diffuse light holds it and His pallor together. The hands carry no nail marks. Giovanni Bellini made an imago pietatis for meditation, and the morning keeps coming up behind Him.
