Our Lady wears a black cloak over her head, holds her dead Son, and looks straight out with red-rimmed eyes. Kara Lysandra Ross, at the Art Renewal Center, reads the cloak as mourning and the hold as a clutch: she does not offer the body outward. Round them the angels are robed in every colour of the rainbow, the sign God showed Noah. On a stained cloth at His feet lies the crown of thorns. William-Adolphe Bouguereau painted it in 1876, the year after his son Georges died at sixteen, and inscribed the vase beside it: IN MEMORIAM DILECTI MEI FILII GEORGII. She will not hand Him over.
