About this painting

Our Lady sleeps on a stone bench, and the Christ Child sleeps in her lap, His feet bare. Three angels bend close, and one bows a violin. A lullaby is made to disturb nothing. Kara Lysandra Ross reads the three as the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, and the sleep as peace unaware of the suffering to follow. When the Getty X-rayed the canvas it found almost no corrections: Bouguereau only shifted a few pegs on the violin of the angel at the centre. After the Salon of 1881 it went to an American collector, and in 1940 to Glendale. The only change he made was a tuning.
