Twelve stars over Our Lady's veil, and the Christ Child she holds throws both arms wide to bless. Regina Angelorum, Queen of the Angels. Round the throne angels join their hands or lay them at the breast; two at the front swing censers, as in the Apocalypse incense goes up with the prayers of the saints. The Petit Palais describes a Byzantine throne of coloured stone after the mosaics of Ravenna, and ties the work back to Cimabue and Duccio. Kara Lysandra Ross counts twenty-one angels, all the same model; William-Adolphe Bouguereau usually took hands, eyes and hair from different sitters. Here one face rings the throne.
