About this painting

Look at the scales. In the higher of the two pans a tiny man is kneeling, praying to the Virgin — and his pan is the one that rises. The Gallery's own description records him. The armoured figure holding the balance wears a gold helmet and a muscled breastplate and lifts a sword in his other hand. Four angels hover behind Mary, one with white flowers and one with lilies. The whole picture is an argument that intercession outweighs judgment.
