About this painting

A dead man's right hand lies on his mother's shoulder, almost transparent through the blue of her mantle. No Gospel puts the dead Christ in Mary's lap. This is the Imago Pietatis, and Lippi paints the corpse coming back to life.

The face has begun to animate; the hair is the one note of colour left. Behind them, black rock, alluding to Joseph of Arimathea's tomb. Mary's face carries something closer to victory than grief; John the Evangelist's sorrow stays inward, head bowed.

The left hand is still curled. Those fingers have not got their life back yet.
