About this painting

The dead Christ sits up in the stone tomb, His head fallen to one side, held between two others. The Museo Poldi Pezzoli reads the scene as Christ rising from the sarcophagus, the Virgin holding His head, Saint John supporting Him at the waist, the shroud drawn over His hair, and points to a hand on Mary's shoulder, its arm hidden by hers, as proof of how carefully Lippi planned the group. The e-venise guide sees the face beginning to come alive while the skin keeps the grey of the shroud. Behind them a bare mountain opens in a grotto: the museum's rock tomb of Joseph of Arimathea.
