The Child lies naked on grass and flowers, a hand at His mouth, and Our Lady kneels to Him with folded hands. There is no manger. Erich Schleier's entry for the Gemäldegalerie traces this to fourteenth-century visions, the Franciscan John de Caulibus's and Saint Birgitta's, in which Mary adored her newborn on the bare ground. Above, God the Father leans out of cloud and the Holy Spirit, as a dove, hangs beneath Him. The boy Baptist stands with his staff; the museum gives him the idea of penance, and finds Lippi's name on the handle of an axe in a tree trunk at lower left. The axe is laid already at the root.
