The Child lies naked on bare ground, no manger — Mary kneels to adore him. Above, the Father appears in cloud; a dove hovers; gold rays fall onto the Child, the Trinity drawn as one shaft of light.
Painted around 1459 for the Medici family's chapel in Florence. At left, the boy John the Baptist carries a staff lettered "Ecce Agnus Dei" — the sacrifice named inside the nursery.
An axe lies at the tree's root, Lippi's signature on its handle. The Gemäldegalerie reads it as the penitential preacher's warning, which makes it the boy's, thirty years early.
