About this painting
The credit is lettered on a scroll, and it is not the painter's. An angel unrolls ISTE PERFECIT OPUS — this man completed the work — before a kneeling figure long taken for Lippi, now generally thought to be Francesco Maringhi, the canon who commissioned it.
God the Father, not the Son, sets the crown; angels carry the priestly stole he wears and the lilies the gallery reads as Mary's purity. Every act is assigned.
At the left kneels a Carmelite friar in white, likely Lippi himself, looking out of the crowd he painted. No scroll is unrolled before him.
