Two tall candles lean in the angels' hands, and their flames are gone. Boston's curators read the moment as the Resurrection: the stone rolled from the tomb, a breeze putting out the candles, Christ's massive body stirring to life. His eyes are still shut; four angels crowd close at His shoulders. The museum sets the beauty of this body against pictures that dwell on the suffering of death. His hair and beard are red, like the painter's own, since Rosso Fiorentino means the red-headed Florentine, and he inscribed the bench at lower right RUBEVS FLO FACIEBAT: Rosso of Florence made this. The painter lent the rising Lord his own colouring. Death holds Him seated, and has already begun to lose.
