A dead man lies on his bier in red, and the living stand around him in their own clothes. Behind him an altar waits with its cross. "And devout men took order for Stephen's funeral and made great mourning over him." Fra Filippo Lippi and his workshop painted the mourning low on the left wall of the main chapel at Prato, and laid the saint, as the Web Gallery of Art reads it, on the central axis of a columned nave at the crossing, the tiled floor running up to the bier. The mourners are Lippi's contemporaries. Roggero Roggeri identifies the heavy figure at the right, in a cardinal's ample red, as Enea Silvio Piccolomini, later Pope Pius II. Tuscany's regional guide sees a probable self-portrait in the older of the two friars beside him: the painter, a friar himself, standing at the bier.
