These were not pictures. The Art Institute records that its six panels came from a set of twelve that probably formed the doors of a reliquary shrine — shutters you opened to reach a saint's bones. Inside this one the boy John appears twice, walking out of the city gate and again small on the mountain path above, because Giovanni di Paolo repeated a figure to show it moving. The ploughed fields between are laid out like folded cloth.
And the child grew and was strengthened in spirit: and was in the deserts until the day of his manifestation to Israel.
