About this painting

Three haloes lie in the grass, each with its head, and the bodies lie apart. The two saints kneel blindfold, one in red, one in yellow, and the sword goes up again. Cosmas and Damian, the twin physicians who took no fee, had survived several attempts on their lives before this one. The Web Gallery of Art reads the five cypresses standing in a row behind them as the five who die. The Louvre identifies the work as part of the predella of Fra Angelico's high altarpiece for San Marco in Florence, whose other scenes are now in Florence, Dublin, Munich and Washington. The trees are already standing.
