About this painting

Horses stand around the Cross as on a market day, and at its foot a skull lies in the dirt. The Met reads the ring of soldiers and horsemen as a circle Fra Angelico took from Ghiberti's bronze doors for the Florence Baptistery. Below, Our Lady has fallen into the arms of Mary Magdalen and Mary of Cleophas: "Now there stood by the cross of Jesus, his mother and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalen." She does not stand now. The Museum thinks it was made for private devotion, small enough to be held close.
