About this painting

Boats cross the green water, and in the foreground a dead monk lies on a red cloth while his brothers bend over him. Budapest's Museum of Fine Arts reads that burial as perhaps Ephraim the Syrian's, and counts the rest of the desert's traffic: hermits carried in litters and hand-carts, one cart pulled by two lions; food lowered in baskets to anchorites in their caves; a recluse fed by an angel; a holy man blessing kneeling monks. Fra Angelico sets the churches among the rocks like architects' models. The desert was meant to be empty. Here everyone is on the way somewhere.
