Saint Peter's halo lies on the ground like a dropped plate, because his head is down there with it. Men with hammers bend over the Cross to nail him head-down; the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin says he asked to die so, in humility before Christ. On the right a sword goes up, and Saint John the Baptist bends forward to meet it among the soldiers' red shields: "And he sent, and beheaded John in the prison." Masaccio painted the two deaths in 1426 for a polyptych in Santa Maria del Carmine at Pisa, long since dismantled; Berlin holds this scene with two companions from it, bought in 1880 from the Marchese Gino Capponi in Florence. The museum says the memory of the saints' suffering strengthened the faith. The halo waits on the stones.
