A tax collector in a short orange tunic stands with his back to us, no halo, one hand out, and the whole haloed company turns on him. Christ answers with an open hand, and Peter, beside Him, points off toward the water, repeating His gesture, as Beth Harris and Steven Zucker of Smarthistory observe. Masaccio lets the light enter from the right, the way the chapel's real light falls, so every shadow runs left; the painted architecture draws its lines to Christ's head, and Gabriella Stabile Di Blasi reads the optics as aimed at Him. Across the wall Peter appears three times: told, stooping over the fish, paying. Felice Brancacci endowed the chapel in Santa Maria del Carmine, Florence, where the fresco still stands. One coin, from a fish's mouth, pays "for me and thee."
