Every man on this rock came here to be alone, and the valley is full of them. One hermit draws at a well; one rides a deer; boats cross the water. Athanasius wrote that after Anthony the desert was colonised by monks, and here is the colony. The Uffizi reads the river and its trees as the spiritual garden where ascetic virtue prospers, and says the attribution to Fra Angelico is not universally accepted. Richard Stracke recalls that Onuphrius passed sixty years in the empty desert; here he has neighbours on every side. On one bank men carry an elder on a stretcher. Alone, and still carrying one another.
