The Crippled and Sick Cured at the Tomb of Saint Nicholas (Quaratesi Polyptych predella)

About this painting

A predella is the small picture at the foot of a large one, and it is where the miracles go. Pilgrims crowd the tomb of Saint Nicholas — the crippled and the sick, brought to a relic and healed. It sat beneath the Quaratesi altarpiece on the main altar of San Niccolò Oltrarno in Florence until the 1790s, an altarpiece the painter signed and dated in May 1425 and a 1518 inventory called simply very beautiful. Washington has also shown the panel as Pilgrims at the Tomb of Saint Nicholas.
