The Child's right hand reaches up to His Mother's neckline, where the National Gallery of Art reads a single word, MATER, and completes it as Mother of God. Along her hem, the Gallery records, runs the angel's greeting, AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA. He sits bare-footed in blue on her lap; her eyes are lowered, one hand at His side. The Gallery calls Gentile da Fabriano's art cosmopolitan, brilliant color, textural richness and ornamental pattern combined. An 1874 sale catalogue gave the Child a pomegranate, and the Gallery allows that a restorer may have painted one in, cleaned away before 1911. What He reaches for now is a word.
