About this painting

The picture says what it is, in gold. MATER runs across the Virgin's collar, and along the hem of her dress the angel's greeting — AVE MARIA GRATIA PLENA DOMINUS TECUM BENEDICTA. Gentile writes the salutation into the cloth rather than onto a scroll, so she is wearing the words spoken to her. One curiosity sits in the record: an 1874 sale catalogue describes a Child holding a pomegranate, and the National Gallery notes plainly that the description does not correspond with this painting.
