Four small angels, the National Gallery of Art's description says, catch the blood in golden chalices. Our Lady sinks at the foot of the Cross, held by the women beside her. By the thief on the left an angel lifts a man no bigger than a doll; by the other, a demon holds one out. The Museum of the Bible reads them as the two thieves' souls, one received, one snatched. A bearded rider touches his eye and red rays leave the lid; some say, the Golden Legend reports, that Longinus was blind until the blood from the spear reached his eyes. Far off under the gold sky Christ rides a donkey toward the city, and a man hangs from a tree with a scarlet bag at his neck: Judas. The Master of the Death of Saint Nicholas of Münster leaves nothing off this hill, not the rope.
