Skulls litter the ground beneath the cross — medieval tradition held one was Adam's, buried at Golgotha. Serpents wind among the skulls, death made visible. A green shoot rises from a trunk cut dead beside the cross — the New Covenant grown out of the Old.
The two thieves hang from bare, truncated trees; Christ alone hangs on a carpentered cross, set apart even in his execution. Soldiers ride back toward Jerusalem, having just pierced his side.
Antonello signed and dated the panel himself: 1475.
