Three men hang, one on wood cut for the purpose. The thieves twist on bare, lopped trees; Christ hangs straight on a carpentered cross, set apart from them, as the Cavallini to Veronese entry notes, even in His execution. Below Him Our Lady sits on the ground in blue, hands folded, and across from her a young man in red looks up with his hands joined. Skulls lie among the stones. The Flemish collections' entry says the skull represents Adam, believed since the tenth century to be buried on Golgotha, and reads a new twig springing from an old trunk behind the cross as the Old Testament and the New. The KMSKA reads skulls and serpents as sin and death; the soldiers, having pierced His side, ride back toward Jerusalem. Antonello da Messina signed and dated it 1475. An owl sits on a stone, and the sea lies calm.
